The South Oakleigh Club was born out of the aspirations of a small group of men in 1952 who met in a garage and
decided to build a community club for men.
No doubt the philosophy of the club, as we know it today, began back here.
'To promote a spirit of fellowship and co-operation and to provide recreational facilities for members-non-political,
non-sectarian and with all members having equal rights, privileges and responsibilities.'
Land was purchased in 1953 and the first building was a small 3 roomed weatherboard structure. The bar opened in
1958. By the 1960s the club had grown with new facilties being added, through the hard work and fundraising by the
members. They added a squash court, kitchen, a large lounge-dining room, parking facilities and a beer garden.
Dinner dances were frequent events and membership numbers grew. Facilities continued to improve with a new
bowling green and the Fiesta Room being added and membership numbers increased even more.
In 1997 the constitution was changed and women were allowed to become members for the first time. The club has
since changed its culture from a "men's" club to a community Sports and Entertainment Club, to be enjoyed by all.
In January 2001, a fire totally destroyed the Club, which has now been rebuilt to provide modern, purpose built
facilities.
The new and improved South Oakleigh Club opened on Tuesday 24th Sep 2002.
